Fake

Original title: フェイク
English title: Fake
Author: Matoh Sanami
Publisher: Tokyopop
Language: English
Genre: Yaoi, romance, action, comedy, slice of life

Fake is actually a title I gave up on buying a long time ago. Since it’s been published by Tokyopop, it’s very hard to buy all the volumes and, if you’re lucky enough to find them, they’re unbelievably expensive. That’s why when I found all seven volumes on eBay for about 50 or 55 bucks (including shipping to Poland from the US!) I didn’t hesitate and bought them immediately. ;) And, despite of them showing some signs of wear on corners and edges, it was definitely worth it.

Say hello to two New York City’s police department’s cops - Dee and Ryo, who are assigned to be work partners. Of course, as you can imagine, their relationship doesn’t remain only professional for long. ;) But I must say one thing - it develops so nicely and in good pace that it’s really a great pleasure to read the story! The characters are funny and likeable as well - and I don’t mean only the main couple, but other characters as well.

The style of drawing is typical for 90s - the art is sometimes messy, but it doesn’t really bother me. The only thing that seems odd to me is guns our officers use - for goodness sake, they look as if they’re taken straight from the 60s (but I’m not really interested in guns, so I might be babbling as well).

About the English edition itself - I’m not a fan of Tokyopop’s manga. At all. The translation’s not so good, there are some typos or abbreviations that I sometimes find hard to decipher. Onomatopeias are left as they were, with no translation at all. No inner margins are left on the pages as well. As you can see on the top photo, they didn’t even manage to make all the spines look the same (logo...), even though all the volumes I own are from the first printing. But… it’s not like I can buy any better edition, so I’ll just accept it the way it is. ;)

I only regret that no English nor Polish publisher seems interested in licencing sequel to Fake, which is four volumes in Japan as for now (and still ongoing) - how I’d love to have it along with the main story on my shelf! :(
